ATA Carnet Webinars Reach Businesses for World Trade Month

Monday, June 21, 2021

Boomerang carnets® celebrated World Trade Month this May by offering weekly webinars on various ways ATA Carnets facilitate expansion for companies seeking growth.  The series of webinars were free of charge and presented with longstanding Boomerang partner, SOS Global Logistics.  They covered logistics and the variety of applications ATA Carnets play in trade insofar as saving money and time, and specifics to certain border crossings.  All were well attended by businesses and interested colleagues.  We are grateful to our hosts for organizing and reaching out to trade constituents and businesses seeking to know more about ATA Carnets.  Our thanks to the Illinois SBDC International Trade Center, the Houston Export Assistance Center/US Commercial Service, and the U.S. Commercial Service Dallas-Fort Worth.

Kiel Ursin, Carnet Specialist with boomerang carnets® and accomplished ATA Carnet presenter in the U.S. and U.K. covered the basics with an overview of ATA Carnets, their benefits, usage, as well as sharing his experiential knowledge and insight regarding their unique applications as a flexible trade tool.

The ATA Carnet is an internationally accepted customs document for temporarily exported merchandise or goods.  It allows cross border movement of those goods import-duty and -tax free into 87+ carnet countries and territories for up to a year.  The ATA Carnet is known as the “Merchandise Passport” for boomerang freight® because everything that goes out returns to the country of origin. The ATA Carnet optimizes opportunity by levelling the playing field so that an SME can compete with any size enterprise.  Companies save the money they would otherwise spend in payment of import-duty and -taxes to demo or temporarily utilize their products or equipment overseas.

Reactions to the Webinar

Jean Lin, Program Manager for the Illinois SBDC International Trade Center thought that the webinar helped to “educate exporters that the ATA Carnet is an option for them and to help them understand how ATA Carnets work. The 5 important pre-departure tips serve as a very good reminder and checklist.”

Jessica Gordon, Director, U.S. Commercial Service Dallas-Fort Worth for the International Trade Administration | U.S. Department of Commerce shared her observations.  “The webinar provided an excellent opportunity for U.S. companies to learn about the utility and benefits of ATA Carnets as a temporary export method.  I realized that a large majority of companies attending the webinar were new to using ATA Carnets.  They were able to enhance their knowledge about the requirements for using carnets and various registration processes for Canada and Mexico, as well as have their specific questions answered about export documentation and the VAT specific to both markets.  I am grateful to boomerang carnets® and SOS Global for their partnership in delivering the webinar and to all those who attended.”
