Mexico Becomes 71st Country to Join ATA Carnet System

Mexico begins accepting and issuing carnets on Monday, May 16th, 2011. Special considerations such as pre-registration and translation are in place from the Mexican carnet authority, CANACO, and they are detailed in our Mexico Advisory.

Latin American carnet countries, in addition to Mexico, are Chile and Puerto Rico. Brazil is in the process of becoming a member of the ATA Carnet system. The carnet can be used for travel into Latin American non-carnet countries but its acceptance cannot be guaranteed. Carnets can always be used instead of the US Registration of Goods form (CF4455) to avoid import duties when returning to the US.

Carnet users traveling to Mexico are advised to contact a Carnet Specialist in advance of departure to ensure compliance with the Mexican carnet authorities requirements.
