FAQs Relating To COVID-19

Tuesday, April 7, 2020

We hope this update finds you safe and well. Our staff are safely working from home and available to answer your questions. Please call the Carnet Helpline, 800.ATA.2900, to speak to a Specialist.

For quick reference, we've compiled a list of FAQs recently received. Below are the answers to those pertaining to COVID-19 issues.

Q: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to re-export our goods before the expiration date of the Carnet. Can we apply for an extension?

A: YES. An extension can be requested PRIOR to the expiration of the 6-month or 12-month period of validity of the ATA Carnet.

Q: My trip was cancelled due to COVID-19. Can I get a refund on my Carnet purchase?

A: YES. We offer a 14-day cancellation policy on unused Carnets. Fees apply. Contact your Carnet Specialist for more details.

Q: The person who was originally going to travel with the goods is no longer able/willing to, due to safety concerns. Can someone else travel in their place? How can I add their names to the Carnet?

A: YES. We can draft an authorized representative letter for any traveler or company not listed on the Carnet. It's available for your use immediately.

Q: How is COVID-19 affecting hand carry shipments vs. cargo? How can I move forward using my carnet if we can no longer hand carry?

A: Air travel has not shut down completely out of the U.S. so, you can, theoretically, hand carry your Carnet. Booking a return flight to the U.S. may be more difficult. If your plans allow for the goods to be shipped as cargo, using the carnet for cargo is an option. You can ask a Carnet Specialist for details.

Q: We might be shipping/travelling in the next few months, but we are unsure what will be possible by then...should I apply for my carnet now, or wait?

A: YES, apply now. Your application will be processed and then held in the queue. When your plans are finalized, your carnet can be issued and sent to you without additional delay. Your newly issued Carnet will be valid for a full 12-month term.

Q: My trip has been postponed due to COVID-19. Can I use my Carnet at a later date?

A: YES. Your Carnet is valid for 12 months from the date of issue and can be used at a later date as long as the items on the General List remain unchanged. Your Carnet is valid for ALL Carnet countries in the system; and it's not country specific.
