On April 30, we presented the webinar, ATA Carnets 101: Streamline Trade & Boost Business Growth in partnership with the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI).  The webinar explored the fundamentals of ATA Carnets, focusing on their use and how they save money and time for your temporary international trade.

Top Questions from the Webinar: What You Need to Know

Using an ATA Carnet can simplify international temporary imports for your goods and merchandise, but questions often come up about what you can and can’t do with goods while they’re abroad.  Here are the top three questions from the recent webinar Q&A that address selling goods, same day carnets, and licensing requirements.  Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Can I Sell Goods While Using an ATA Carnet?
    Yes, you can.  The ATA Carnet is designed for temporary importation—you bring goods or merchandise into a foreign country without paying duties and taxes, as long as the items return to the country of origin.  However, there are instances where a sale may occur.  
    For example, let’s say you're demonstrating a medical device across five countries, and the final destination—the sixth—is where you plan to sell it.  You can still benefit from avoiding duty and tax in the first five countries and then pay customs duties and taxes when it’s permanently imported into the sixth.  This is a valid use of the carnet and avoids unnecessary freight costs or multiple customs payments on your itinerary.  We can provide detailed guidance if you sell goods while using a carnet.
  2. Is Same Day Carnet® Service Available at Your Distribution Center Locations?
    Yes, Same Day Carnets are possible at our Boomerang Carnet Distribution Center locations.  Most of our listed locations partner with us and have dedicated carnet printers.  While some printers are designated for specific clients (like freight forwarders), they can be flexible and are happy to help, even on short notice.  Just give us a call first and we will make the necessary arrangements. 
  3. Do I Still Need Export Licenses if I Use a Carnet?
    Yes, you do.  The ATA Carnet only covers exemption from duties and taxes on your temporary imports—it doesn’t waive compliance with export controls or licensing regulations.  You must still obtain and adhere to any required domestic or foreign export licenses.  You can absolutely use a carnet with license-controlled goods, as long as all the license requirements are met.
